Stolen rice valued at R1-m and hijacked by bogus cops

Following an article published in the City Times recently, about stolen rice, Steve Nahman, of Star Trac Vehicle Tracking, corrected some of the information given by the EMPD.

Nahman said the rice recovered following a truck hijacking on September 3, was valued at R1-million and not R650 000 as said by the EMPD.

Nahman added that the driver of the truck was hijacked by bogus cops, on the N3, near Vosloorus,

He said his company played a crucial role in the recovery of the hijacked truck.

Nahman said the truck was reported stolen to them at 9.20am with both their tracking unit and other companies’ units both not being able to update due to a jamming device being used by hijackers.

“At 9.55am we managed to get a strong signal from the truck and dispatched recovery to Benoni, where we arrived at 10.30am only to catch one suspect fleeing,” said Nahman.

He said his ground crew gave chase, caught the suspect and handed him over to the SAPS.

“We discovered that the driver was tied up and he confirmed that he was hijacked by bogus cops,” said Nahman.

He said after his team handed the suspect over to the SAPS, they got him to give them the location where the rice was offloaded.

“It turned out that Pakistani man and his wife were involved,” he said.

The rice was recovered in Springs and a total of 12 people were arrested.
