Man accuses Wordsworth pupils of assault

Police are investigating assault charges against several Wordsworth High School pupils.

Benoni SAPS media liaison officer Lieut Nomsa Sekele confirmed that the case was opened at the Benoni SAPS on September 5.

“The matter is being investigated and the SAPS is in the process of obtaining witness statements before the suspects’ parents can be approached to interview the minors involved,” said Sekele.

According to the complainant in the case, who does not want to be identified, he was assaulted by a group of pupils on Thursday, September 4.

He said he was in his vehicle, at a stop street on Wordsworth Road, when one of the alleged assailants looked into his vehicle.

The motorist asked the pupil what the matter was, after which the pupil apparently challenged the 38-year-old man.

He said he got out of the vehicle and was encircled by several school children.

The man added that he then drove into the school’s premises and complained about the pupils’ behaviour at the front office.

The victim said he was pushed, punched and kicked upon exiting the school gate on foot.

He said he received three stitches to his nose and sustained damage to his back, which was operated on four months ago.

Wordsworth High School secretary to the principal Debbie Lawrenson confirmed the incident involved the school’s pupils, but said it took place off the school premises.

She added that the school is unable to comment on anything else, as the matter is being discussed with the district office.
