Police pounce on robbers offloading hijacked boxes of cigarettes valued at R90 000

Crystal Park SAPS detectives arrested two of the seven men who robbed a cigarette delivery truck, in Crystal Park, on September 9.

Benoni SAPS Cluster spokesperson Lieut Nomsa Sekele said that a British American Tobacco (BAT) vehicle was attacked by seven robbers, in two cars — a blue Toyota Yaris and a white Toyota Quantum — while making deliveries at the Crystal Park Spar.

The men produced firearms, pointed at the driver of the truck and ordered him to get back into the vehicle.

He was ordered to drive to Cloverdene and to stop next to the water reservoir, where the robbers started offloading the cigarette boxes, valued at R90 000.

Consts Edwin Mdhluli and Azwandini Mabuda were driving past when they noticed the cigarettes being offloaded.

The two officers approached the truck, as it seemed very suspicious.

The suspects managed to jump into their vehicles and drive away when they noticed the police, but the officers cornered two of them, who tried to flee on foot.

Both suspects, aged 31 and 37, were arrested and detained at Crystal Park SAPS.

They are expected to appear in the Benoni Magistrates Court.

Police are looking for more suspects, who disappeared with seven boxes of cigarettes.

Crystal Park SAPS station commander Lieut Col Belinda Motaung praised the two members for their swift reaction and thanked them for making an excellent arrest.
