Halfway Supermarket robbers sentenced

Two men were sentenced in the Benoni Magistrates Court, for their role in the robbery at the Halfway Supermarket, in the Benoni Agricultural Holdings.

Vusi Musi Mabena (28) pleaded guilty to business robbery and was sentenced to 13 years imprisonment.

Jabulani Mkhwanazi (29) pleaded not guilty, but was found guilty of robbery with aggravating circumstances (15 years), possession of a firearm (15 years), possession of ammunition (six months) and murder (15 years), on August 29.

The two men who were sentenced had two accomplices in the robbery of the supermarket on March 16,

The group assaulted the shop owners and fled in the car of one of the victims.

A high speed chase ensued and the robbers lost control of the vehicle on the corner of Totius and Springs roads.

One of the robbers was declared dead on scene, presumably shot by one of his accomplices.

The fourth suspect involved in the robbery is on the run and police are still investigating the case,

Crystal Park SAPS station commander Lieut Col Belinda Motaung and the acting branch commander, Lieut Lorraine Singo, thanked WO Richard Bloem for his dedication to the case.

Both men will serve their sentences in Modderbee Prison.
