Artistic creativity for world peace

Peace, love and understanding was the theme for this year's Lions Peace Poster competition.

Those who lived up to the theme were rewarded at the combined Lions Peace Poster prize-giving function, at St Francis College, on Saturday, September 5.

The first and second prize winners from the 16 schools that participated were invited and received certificates for their individual art works.

The overall winners are:

Grand prize winner, Cameron Turck, from Curro Serengeti Academy, received R2 000.

Second place winner, Ansofi Pretorius, from Veritas College, won R1 500.

Third place winner, Gemma Rees, from Veritas College, won R1 000.

The competition is hosted by Lions Clubs International and aims to encourage the youth to take an active part within their communities.

Beaulieu Maré, zone chairman, said the club aims to teach the youth that making a change starts with them.

The posters were judged on whether they portrayed the theme of love, peace and understanding.

And, during the judges’ feedback, they encouraged the young artists to continue drawing and expressing their thoughts through art.

“Don’t give up, art is fun and keep drawing,” said Auriel Garbutt, judge and member of Benoryn Lioness Club.

The first place winners from each school go on to compete at the district level.

And from there, a winner will be chosen to compete at the multi district level and the winner will go on to compete internationally and, hopefully, have an opportunity to speak at the United Nations.
