Benoni women bring warmth to disadvantaged babies

Thanks to the knitting skills of women in Benoni, some disadvantaged babies now sleep warmer at night.

Several residents of the Rynpark Retirement Village, together with women of the Wow book club, from the Full Gospel Church, knit newborn baby jerseys, garments and blankets throughout the year, for the jersey project.

They recently knitted approximately 200 items, which were distributed to a number of rural hospitals and clinics in need, around the country.

The jersey project started about four years ago, when the friend of the son of one of the knitters, Gayle Dismore, was completing his physio degree and was an intern at Coronationville Hospital.

He was working in the paediatric unit and was horrified to see babies being dumped at the hospital completely naked, or being taken home wrapped in newspaper.

With the help of members, Gayle and Hazel Dismore, and many other willing volunteers, the project was initiated.

Members of the book club, Rynpark residents and other friends were roped in about two years ago and these women have been knitting and collecting items nonstop since then.

They have wholeheartedly embraced the project which has now spread across the country.

Many of the women rely on the donation of wool, preferably double knitting.
