DA calls for ‘clear message’ against violence

The Democratic Alliance (DA) has condemned the looting and lawlessness that took place during the Daveyton protest, on Tuesday.

It says a clear message needs to be sent to protesters that such actions will not be tolerated and that they will be held accountable.

Mervyn Cirota, DA spokesperson on human settlements, said the DA fully supports the right of South African’s to take part in peaceful and law-abiding protest action.

“However, the looting and lawlessness displayed by protesters in Daveyton this week is completely unacceptable,” he added.

The party has asked that the MEC for human settlements set up a forum where community members are able to air their grievances and frustrations.

“The MEC must also provide political leadership at this time, by explaining what steps will be taken to address the community’s concerns,” said Cirota.
