LATEST: Ekurhuleni mayor set to address protesting Daveyton residents on Sunday

Ekurhuleni Mayor Mondli Gungubele, will address residents at Sinaba Stadium on Sunday, August 24, starting at 9am.

He is expected to provide a way forward in terms of issues that led to the protest, said mayoral spokesperson Zweli Dlamini.

Meanwhile, Daveyton SAPS have arrested seven more suspects for the looting of foreign-owned shops in Daveyton.

“The suspects were found in possession of stolen items from the looted shops; they will appear in the Daveyton Magistrates Court today,” said Capt Alfred Nakana.

In total, 16 people have been arrested for looting, as nine suspects were arrested on Tuesday.

Since the tense protest on Tuesday, calm has descended upon Daveyton, as meetings are scheduled to be held to discuss the progress of the protesters’ demands to build on vacant land in the area.
