Post office extends mail delivery deadline

The South African Post Office has set itself another deadline to sort out the mail delivery woes on the East Rand.

South African Post Office communications officer Johan Kruger said on Monday the mail delivery delay on the East Rand is expected to be normalised by Monday, August 18.

”The SA Post Office is working over weekends to deliver the backlog of mail on the East Rand, which built up after the dismissal of roughly 30 per cent of mail delivery staff in the area,” said Kruger.

”These individuals failed to report for duty.

”Management at executive level has become involved to make sure that the delivery plans are effective and implemented smoothly.”

Kruger said the depot in Benoni is receiving priority since it is experiencing the biggest backlog.

He said the post office is assessing all delivery offices in the area twice a week to revise delivery plans where necessary.

Kruger failed to say whether the staff that had been dismissed were on strike.

The City Times spoke to a postman from the Benoni Post Office last week.

According to the employee, who wished to remain anonymous, 17 permanent staffers were fired at the Benoni Post Office on June 13.

He said those fired include postmen, supervisors and sorters.

They were apparently fired a month after embarking on a strike, apparently because they were not paid out their pension funds.

Kruger said the Post Office would like to thank its customers for their support and understanding.
