Make your writing dream come true

Caxton, Alcatel One Touch and Brandfluent SA, have announced the 2014 Caxton Writing Competition, giving young people from the ages of 14 to 25 a chance to realise their dream of becoming future writers.

The competition, which is in its third year, is characterised by the incredible response to it, amazing opportunities and tons of giveaways.

The competition is set to take place from June 2 to October 31 and, for the first time, it offers adults as well as learners the opportunity to showcase their writing, making it possible to turn their passion into a reality.

Young adults are required to submit essays that should be no longer than 800 words. There are specific themes on which participants can write, and they may submit one essay on each theme.

They may not, however, write more than one story on the same topic.

Themes include:

· Pride – your story should tell the readers why you are proud to live in Johannesburg or Ekurhuleni – using descriptive words that paint a picture of your world will add value to your story.

· Celebrate Life, Celebrate Freedom – with South Africa celebrating 20 years of democracy, this is your opportunity to inspire South Africans with your words and to paint a future of a united South Africa. You may also take the opportunity to celebrate South Africa’s achievements during 20 years of democracy.

· The Gentle Winter Frost – what does winter mean to you? Can you add a positive twist to winter? There is no restriction to your creativity, be as imaginative as you wish.

· Faces of Spring – what is spring to you? Use words to paint a perfect picture of what spring looks like.

· Any topic of your choice – choose any topic and be as creative as you would like to be.

Winners of the Caxton writing competition will receive prizes that include an Alcatel One Touch PIXI handset and an Alcatel One Touch POP 7 Tablet.

The judges this year include Bryony van Zyl, managing director of Brandfluent SA; Gien Elsas, head of training at Caxton; Chris Louw, Caxton digital editor and Reveshni Moodley, Newcastle Advertiser editor.

Van Zyl said: “Being part of this competition once again offers us a window to assess new talent. This worthy opportunity gives young writers the platform to show us what they are made of and it can only result in success.”

Caxton creative writing manager Malcom Maifala explains: “Entering this unique competition allows future, passionate writers, to stand a chance of securing an opportunity with Caxton.”
