Bunny Park renovations near completion

Those who visit the Bunny Park, in Rynfield, could enjoy some noticeable renovations made over the past several months with a municipal budget of R1 000 000.

Despite the Ekurhuleni Metro’s confirmation that the completion date of the renovations was June 30, caretaker at the Bunny Park Gideon Strydom said a few enhancements are yet to be made.

The enclosed area in the middle of the park for the bunnies, one of the most visible implementations, is complete.

Clr Gerrie Kriek, whose ward includes the Bunny Park, said this was done to protect the bunnies from external dangers, such as diseases carried by other bunnies and being chased by visitors to the park.

New shelters for cattle, sheep and goats were built and the pigs’ shelters were upgraded.

Some renovations still in process of completion are four new jungle gyms that are being built on the premises and new picnic furniture, yet to be delivered.

The wooden bridge at the pigs’ shelters was replaced with a safer, concrete bridge.

Irrigation is also being installed around the park and the the borehole is being upgraded.

The five concrete circles for the bunnies will be repaired at the Bunny Park’s own cost, and the braais will be repaired.

Ekurhuleni spokesperson Themba Gadebe said the municipality hopes the new renovations enhance animal facilities that have been neglected and establish gracing fields.

Kriek said there are thoughts of building two new entrances in the future, one of which will have an African theme.

New go-carts were also purchased for children to enjoy and pony rides are available at the park on weekends and public holidays.

The Bunny Park is open daily from 8am till 4pm.
