Benoni Cluster police spokesperson Lieut Nomsa Sekele said three men entered the Maxican Hat general dealer in the CBD just before 8am, and started searching customers and taking their belongings.
They also stole cash from the cashier.
Sekele said as they were busy searching customers, one customer ran out from the shop.
“Once outside, the customer noticed a Benoni police van patrolling and alerted them,” said Sekele.
The police proceeded to the general dealer.
Upon their arrival, one of the robbers pointed a firearm at the police, while his accomplices ran away.
Police shot him, and he died at the scene.
Sekele said some of the stolen cash was recovered, and also the firearm that was used.
