Numsa attributes Benoni strike violence to a third force

The National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (Numsa) has blamed a third force for all the violence characterising recent strikes by its members.

In a press statement, Numsa spokesperson Castro Ngobese said that the union commends its striking workers “for swiftly causing the arrest and apprehension of 10 criminals masquerading as Numsa members in Benoni“.

“The criminals were loitering around wearing Numsa T-shirts, committing acts of criminality and violence, including damage to property around the area of Benoni.”

Ngobese said the criminals were arrested because of the swift action of Numsa members and strike marshals.

“Nothing better confirms the discipline of Numsa members than this behaviour during the strike,” he added.

Meanwhile, Numsa has rejected the latest offer by employers, calling it an insult, and said it will intensify the strike.

Employers offered an extra 0,5 per cent, meaning the offer of employers currently is 10 per cent for the first year,

9.5 per cent for the second year and nine per cent for the third year.

“This recent offer was taken to members on July 10, and we are announcing that this offer has been rejected by our members,” said Ngobese

“Our members are very clear that if employers want a three-year agreement, they must meet workers’ demand of double digit increases which should be on an ascending scale, failing which, our members shall settle for nothing less than 10 per cent for the first year, 10 per cent for the second year and 10 per cent for the third year.”

Workers are also demanding a total ban on labour brokers and a housing allowance of R1 000.

The strike has affected lots of manufacturing companies in Benoni.
