More than just a drinking club

A group of men have followed in the footsteps of some of their fathers, by establishing an elite club to ensure their friendship remains intact after they graduate from school.

The Gentlemen’s Drinking Club (GDC) was established two and a half years ago by a group of school friends who live in Benoni, many of whom attended St Dunstan’s College.

The club started with 11 members and now has 16.

The older generation’s dinner club was formed in 1985 for people who played soccer at the Kempton Park Soccer Club, attended school together or who were just great friends.

”We were 12 guys who would meet once a month at a unique restaurant, never to dine at the same restaurant; this has continued for 29 years and is still active,” said dinner club member Leighton Taylor.

The youngsters and their fathers socialised at the East Rand Harley Motorcycle Club, on Great North Road, on Saturday, June 28.

They also have strict criteria for admittance to the club.

Prospective members have to attend three of their meetings and receive a unanimous vote of confidence from existing members to receive the nod to join the club.

The younger group meets once a month, at local bars in and around Benoni.

GDC vice-president Justin Hefer said they try to socialise locally to support the Benoni business community.

The members raised R30 000 for testicular cancer research, last year.

Hefer said the group realised the club could have a bigger impact and decided to do more charity work in the future – and become more hands on – although charity is not their primary function.
