Smith inducted president

After a fruitful year of leading the Rotary Club of Benoni Van Ryn, Nick Cole-Niven carried out his his final duty as president for the year, by inducting Norman Smith as president for the 2014/2015 Rotary year.

The Rotary Club of Benoni Van Ryn’s 43rd annual induction dinner was held at the Benoni Country Club, on July 3, and boasted great accomplishments.

Four members of the Benoni Rotary Van Ryn Anns were inducted to serve as presidents Ann for a quarter term each.

Gill Davey was inducted as president Ann for the first quarter of the year, by outgoing president Ann, Maureen Fox.

The other president Anns, who will serve the club for the 2014/2015 year, are Lucille Barrenger, Ann Smith and Maria Pinho.

Incoming District Governor of Rotary International’s District 9400, Annie Steijn, attended the evening and addressed the Rotary year ahead.

She acknowledged this year’s Rotary theme, Light up Rotary, and raised the importance of creating awareness on the club and getting the public involved with their ventures.

She said they have not just joined Rotary to put it on their CVs, nor for the respectable status it holds, but because she believes their hearts are in the right place.

Upon his induction Smith thanked Cole-Niven for the contribution he made as leader of the club through the past year.

He said he would like for the club to work together to further Rotary in an innovative approach this year.

“I am looking for projects that will make a big impact,” he said.

He thanked the members for putting their faith in him to lead them through the year.

Four members were honoured with Paul Harris Fellowship Awards for their outstanding service to the community.

They are Yvonne Holmes, Bob Savage, Trevor Hudson and Alf Lyle.

Recipients of the 100 per cent attendance awards are Alan Barrable, Bob Savage, Brian Ancient, Neil Murray, Robin Bath, Collin Thornton and Cheryl Gallagher.

Ken and Linda Gosnell acted as master and mistress of ceremonies and entertained the members with a delightful revelation of meanings of some common phrases and idioms.
