A bash for bookworms

Every three months the Benoni Library is turned into a book fair for book-lovers.

The Friends of the Library Book Bash was started a decade ago, and has been growing strongly since its humble beginnings.

“We ask for donations from the public and every three months we host a Book Bash,” said Ann Smith, from Friends of the Library.

Over the years there has been an overwhelming number of donations from the public, which has allowed various Benoni communities to benefit.

Smith says the money raised from the Book Bashes is used to buy new books that are donated to the Benoni Library.

“Because of the many donations we received, we decided to donate some of the books to schools and old age homes,” said Smith.

Yagya Dollie, from Benoni Central, has been supporting the Book Bash for 10 years.

“My wife and I have been visiting the Book Bash since 2006, because it was something we did together,” he said.

“And I continue to support it even after her death in 2009.”

He enjoys the various genres offered, and believes one should not limit themselves to one type of book. He also buys books for his daughter, who enjoys romance novels.

The Book Bash is held every three months at the Benoni Library, and offers a variety of fiction and non-fiction books.
