Awful stench chases customers away

Businessmen near the intersection of Harpur Avenue and Tom Jones Street have had enough of the sewer stench in the area.

Sewage water is flowing in both streets, starting from the pump-station in Rangeview Road.

For two weeks, businessmen and their customers have had to put up with the stench.

They have unsuccessfully tried to get the metro to fix the problem.

“It’s not the first time that it breaks out like this,” said one man, adding that it’s been happening for two years.

“Whenever it happens we phone and they come and fix it, but this time they just ignored it,” he said.

The businessman is scared that the stench might lead to people in the vicinity catching diseases.

He said exposure to sewer stench could lead to dysentery, an intestinal inflammation, especially in the colon, that can lead to severe diarrhoea with mucus or blood in the faeces.

The metro had not commented on our enquiry at the time of going to print.
