Stolen iPhone reveals thugs whereabouts

The signal from a stolen iPhone helped in tracking down two of the four men who robbed a house in Rynfield, on June 30.

Benoni police spokesperson Lieut Nomsa Sekele said a Rynfield house owner was waiting at the gate for her clients to arrive, when the incident occurred at around noon.

“Her clients, a woman and her daughter, arrived in a BMW and she opened the gate for them, but, as they entered, a red BMW with four occupants also drove in,” said Sekele.

Two men, one armed with a knife and the other with a gun, jumped out of the car and forced the three women into the house.

The other two men remained in the car.

The house owner’s son and their domestic worker were inside the house

“The men took two handbags, belonging to the house owner and her client, a plasma TV and an iPhone belonging to the owner’s son,” said Sekele.

The two men also drove away in the client’s BMW and the family’s VW Tiguan.

The matter was immediately reported to the EMPD and the Benoni CPF who, through the signal from the stolen iPhone, managed to trace the suspects to Leondale.

Upon arriving there they found both cars abandoned near a school.

All the other stolen items were missing and the BWW was left idling.

Sekele said the Benoni CPF later picked up the iPhone signal in Dawn Park and notified the Germiston Flying Squad.

“Members went to a certain house and found a woman with the two handbags that were stolen on a table,” she added.

They questioned the woman, who said the bags belonged to her boyfriend, who was out at the shops at the time.

Police waited for him to come back and he was arrested and led them to another suspect.

However, Sekele said, the iPhone and the plasma TV are still missing.

Sekele said the two men might be linked to several other house robberies in Benoni, and police believe they have made a breakthrough.

The men are expected to appear soon in the Benoni Magistrates Court, and police are still searching for the other two suspects.
