Your blood makes a huge difference

Donate the liquid of love

Due to committed donors, the Benoni branch of the South African National Blood Service (SANBS) has done quite well in the last year, as a new branch.

SANBS collections manager Gillian Laurens shared the statistics at the SANBS clinic controller dinner evening, at the Benoni Country Club, on June 20, to honour the best performing clinic controllers.

Laurens said the target for the branch was set at 27 577 units for the 2013/14 period, but it ended up achieving 28 401 units.

The new year’s target is 28 700 units.

She said 24 per cent of donations come from the black donor population, with a retention rate of 1.2 per annum.

Laurens stressed the importance of retaining the white donor population, saying they are looking into reopening some of the community clinics.

She also advised clinic controllers of their responsibilities before, during and after the donation, to help improve their service.

Vaal Zone donor manager Isaac Mafisa acknowledged the job done by clinic controllers.

“We thank you; it’s very important that you continue to be our partners in collecting this liquid of love,” he said.

SANBS’s Shevonne Lutchman also shared donor education on the night.

Special controller awards went to:

  •  The Northmead Square: Best shopping centre.
  •  Ram Hand to Hand Courier: Best newcomer business.
  •  Springs Secondary School: Most improved school.
  •  Rotary Club of Benoni Aurora: Best supporting organisation.
  •  Die Anker High School: Best school.
  •  Benoni City Times: Best media partner
