Youth learn the importance of caring for the environment

A youth and environment camp was held in Heidelberg

Inqola Yenguquku Training, in conjunction with the City of Ekurhuleni, Erwat, the Department of Water Affairs and the Department of Basic Education, gave 98 young people from different schools in Ekurhuleni, including Daveyton, a chance to experience the environment.

The youth and environment camp, held recently in Heidelberg, was aimed at bringing young people closer to the environment and getting them to be conscious of their surroundings.

Basil Chaza, the managing member of Inqola Yenguquku Training, said it was exciting to see young people who have only lived in urban areas, being exposed to nature.

“It has been said that if we don’t conserve, protect and take care of our water and environment we will be in big trouble,” he added.

“It is imperative that pupils from Ekurhuleni learn to take care of this source of life, and bringing them together to share ideas with their peers was a perfect way to do so.”

The pupils were exposed to various activities that ensured that they became conscious citizens who loved their environment throughout the three-day event.

Chaza emphasised the fact that if South Africans do not take care of the environment, it will be difficult for the generations that follow to experience the beauty that “we are living under today”.

He hailed the camp a success and expressed his plans to make the next camp, in 2015, an even bigger affair than this one.

Chaza expressed his greatest gratitude to all the stakeholders who contributed to the camp being a success.
