Domestic Watch welcomes Benoni

Educating domestic workers about crime prevention

Benoni will hold its first Domestic Watch meeting at 10am on June 24, at the White House Healing Centre, corner Cranbourne Avenue and Kimboltan Street.

Domestic workers, gardeners and employers are welcome to attend, at a cost of R30 per delegate.

Making a Difference (MAD), founded by Penny Steyn, initiated the Domestic Watch.

It is a series of interactive monthly meetings aimed at educating domestic workers and staff about crime prevention.

Steyn works in conjunction with the police with this project, and has been training an average of 1 200 domestics and gardeners monthly.

ADT announced that Benoni would be added to the list of 20 suburbs in Johannesburg where these meetings will take place.

“We encourage residents to support the suburb initiative,” said Clive Humphrey, managing director of ADT’s central region.

The meetings have proven successful, with many domestic workers around Johannesburg implementing what they have learnt.

They react correctly in an emergency, reporting suspicious activity to the SAPS or their security company.

Steyn’s passion in life lies in making a difference to the South African Police Service.

She has trained hundreds of police members and is determined to take her MAD (Making A Difference) Domestic Watch programme nationally, by training others to do this work and thereby creating job opportunities.

The first meeting will be presented by Steyn, and thereafter Domestic Watch coordinator Annie Conway will take over.

Future meetings will take place on the last Wednesday of each month.
