The birth of Lakefield Social Club

On June 4, the Lakefield Social Club was formed and held its first meeting at the Zeus Greek Restaurant, in Lakefield.

The club was formed primarily to serve Benoni, Boksburg and Kempton Park residents who are over 50 years old and retired.

The founder, Pam Harvey, who set up the organisation under the umbrella of the SA Association of Retired Persons (SAARP), a registered, non-profit organisation for persons 50 years and older, was excited about the number of people who came through to join the club.

The restaurant was full to capacity, with over 100 people present, and the welcoming address was given by Harvey.

She was followed by the chairman of SAARP, Paul Rosenbrock, from Cape Town, who gave a brief presentation and talk on the SAARP, and the benefits it offers.

Some of the SAARP services and benefits include providing hearing aids, short term insurance policies, holiday clubs, a family protection plan, car hire and a senior citizen membership card, which is used all over South Africa and the world, to obtain age-related discounts.

All social meetings will be held on the first Wednesday of each month, at the Zeus Restaurant.

The committee has planned an interesting and varied programme of socials and events, until the club’s year-end, on February 28 next year.

Harvey hopes more people will be inspired to start such clubs, as there are only four in the most populated province of Gauteng, compared to more than 80 in the Cape.

“Forming a group offers people new interests and companionship,” said Harvey.
