Cold weather safety tips

The South African Weather Services has cautioned the public against the extremely cold weather conditions that will be experienced in the interior parts of the country this weekend.

Temperatures are due to be very low and, as a result, members of the public are warned to be extra cautious when keeping themselves warm.

Ekurhuleni Emergency Services is on high alert and ready to mitigate any fire-related challenges which might be experienced over the cold winter season.

The emergency services has pleaded with people to be extra cautious by making sure that safety is adhered to at all times.

All types of heaters, paraffin lamps, stoves, fire places, braziers, dry vegetation around residential areas and overloading of electricity supplies, including self-connections, are some of the common causes of devastating, fire-related incidents.

Most fires are caused by negligence and a lack of understanding of heat sources.

“If you don’t know how to operate it, leave it,” is the advice given.

In case of an emergency, call the national toll-free number, 10177, and the Life Threatening Emergency Line on 011 458 0911.
