Benoni man (73) killed in road rage

A 73-year-old Benoni man was killed in a road rage incident, on May 30.

The incident occurred at the intersection of Dewald Hattingh and Heidelberg roads at around 4pm.

Lucas Labuschagne was beaten and kicked to death by the occupants of a Mercedes Benz, which was also pulling a trailer.

Labuchagne was driving from the Carnival Mall towards Benoni, with his son, Jan.

Jan told the City Times that the problem started when they overtook a truck carrying scrap metal near the Leachville-Wattville intersection.

“There was a Mercedes Benz coming from behind, pushing everyone out of the way, but it could not pass us, as we were also overtaking, and maybe they thought my father did it deliberately when they did not get the right of way,” he said.

“From there they started harassing us even though we had moved to the left lane, to give them space.”

When both cars stopped for a red traffic light, at Dewald Hattingh, the four occupants of the Mercedes got out of the car and approached the Labuschagnes aggressively.

“The driver and front seat passenger were fighting me, while the two passengers from the back seat assaulted my dad,” said Jan.

Labuschagne senior had just had an operation in the stomach and Jan said the men kicked him fatally, on the operation wound.

He started bleeding, lost lots of blood and then died.

The four men drove away from the scene at a high speed when they noticed that Labuschagne was bleeding.

Jan said they gave the car’s registration number to the Flying Squad members who came to the scene.

Benoni police spokesperson Lieut Nomsa Sekele said the police have opened a murder docket.

Sekele confirmed that one man died when the men confronted each other physically after stopping at a traffic light.

No one has been arrested and the police are investigating.

Labuschagne senior lived in Denys Conradie Home and his son lives in Western Extension.
