‘Keep your toilet promises,’ DA warns

The Democratic Alliance in Ekurhuleni said it will hold the MMC for Water and Sanitation, Aubrey Nxumalo, to the promise he made during the council meeting, on May 22.

Nxumalo promised to supply more mobile toilets to the beleaguered hostel residents in Actonville.

This promise was made as a result of a motion submitted by DA PR Clr Haseena Ismail, about putting right the “shocking human rights issues” at the hostel.

Ismail said that, while the motion was not formally accepted, many platitudes were offered by the MMC, which the DA will not allow the ruling party to forget.

“The motion noted a petition signed by 500 hostel residents, who simply want a clean environment devoid of sewerage spills which have been ignored for years,” she said.

“Of these residents, 200 are still sharing one toilet, which represents one of the worst health hazards the DA has ever encountered.”

The DA requested that the metro take immediate action and supply the community with more mobile toilets at the hostel, until its conversion into family units, with their own bathrooms, is completed.

“If supplied, these toilets would be maintained in the same way as happens in informal settlements,” said Ismail, adding that the DA had seen some attempts made to resolve this problem, even if they were, undoubtedly, attempts to secure votes.

“The MMC volunteered the information that, in fact, his department had, five weeks before the election, undertaken a major clean-up project of the sewer system in the hostel,” Ismail said.

But, she reported just three days ago, residents were faced, once again, with hundreds of people sharing the same single toilet, as repairs had proved to be temporary.
