Dog who attacked three-year-old saved another child’s life previously

One of the dogs responsible for mauling a three-year-old boy that left him in an ICU unit, will be euthanased.

The owner of the dog, who did not want to be identified, said the male Jack Russell will be put down as the dog did not let go of three-year-old Luke Flemming during the attack.

Luke and his parents live on the property of the dogs’ owner.

Luke was attacked at his Northmead home on Wednesday, last week, by at least two Jack Russells.

The two dogs, and a sausage dog, are apparently under observation at the Benoni SPCA.

Benoni SPCA manager Wilma Steynbergh said it is possible for terriers to attack people, but it is not common.

She emphasised that many incidents could have lead to an attack, such as not having a big enough yard, or very little stimulation.

Steynbergh warned people not to cause a commotion when a dog is in attack mode.

People should not shout at them as it could spur them on, but rather spray water on the dogs.

The manager said she would not advise people to euthanase or not to euthanase their dogs after such an attack.

Instead, she urged people to seek the services of an accredited animal behaviourist to assist with the risk assessment.

People who would like to get in touch with one may contact the Boksburg SPCA on 011 916 5906.

Dog potentially saved child’s life

The owner of the house said his son (10) and daughter (12) are going for counselling after the traumatic attack.

The man said his son (who was five at the time) was protected by the male Jack Russell when a rinkhals approached his son.

The dog attacked the snake and killed it, potentially saving his son from a fatal bite.

The youngster saw the dog as a hero.

His father said his son is heart-broken but understands why the dog will be down.
