”ER24 paramedics and provincial emergency services responded to a call to the area, where they found a large group of Ekurhuleni Metro Police officers and other law enforcement officials,” said ER24 media liaison officer Russel Meiring.
”On assessment, emergency workers discovered that a vehicle had apparently been speeding through a crowd and collided with the officer.”
The vehicle apparently swerved into oncoming traffic and came to rest in the veld after the impact.
The EMPD member was declared dead on scene.
The driver of the vehicle was not injured in the incident and it is believed that he was being questioned by law enforcement officials on the scene.
Local authorities will investigate the incident.
