Putfontein Road officially opened to traffic

The section of Putfontein Road upgraded from Cloverdene Road to Kingsway Road was officially opened to traffic on April 23.

Gauteng road and transport MEC Ismail Vadi cut the ribbon and addressed the community.

Vadi said the reconstructed road will provide better service and advised community members to look after it and respect public infrastructure in general.

“Whenever you protest about something please don’t burn tyres on his road as it will get damaged,” he said.

Ward 24 councillor Refiloe N’tshekhe said the construction was a smooth process and that there are numerous roads which need attention in Ward 24.

“The need is too much and we hope to see you more often in opening roads in this ward,” she said to Vadi.

The section from Cloverdene Road to the N12 Freeway was completed in previous financial year.

Ekurhuleni metro said Putfontein Road is a strategic East West link from Daveyton and Chief Albert Luthuli Park and Crystal Park to the N12 highway.Acting spokesperson Lebogang Ramashala said the road was a dangerous narrow two-lane road with unsafe curves and bends that could not cope with the increased traffic after the establishment of Chief Albert Luthuli Park.

“It could also not be rehabilitated as the layer work and surface was beyond the maintenance stage,” said Ramashala.

She added that the road also required geometric improvements to make it safe and wider to cater for the increased traffic generated in the area.

“A major challenge was to manage the storm water drainage on the road due to the lack of systems in the area but this was achieved by managing it in concrete lined dish drains.”
