They need your blood

The South African National Blood Service (SANBS) is appealing to people to donate blood to boost the blood stock levels.

“The SANBS is experiencing yet another difficult time with regard to blood collections,’’said SANBS Benoni branch public relations practitioner Terrance Pillay.

“Almost 40 per cent of the blood we collect comes from schools and universities and, due to the holidays, we are unable to host these blood drives.

“This, together with many people who also take a break, means the blood stock levels are impacted significantly.’’

A total of 3 000 units of blood is needed a day to meet the demand.

People who would like to donate blood must meet the following criteria:

* weigh at least 50kg;

* be between the ages of 16 to 65;

* lead a safe sexual lifestyle;

* be in general good health; and

* consider your blood safe for transfusion to a patient.

To find out where you can donate, call on 0800 11 90 31, visit www.sanbs.org.za or email to customerservice@sanbs.org.za.
