Battling sewage stench since 2012

Business people along Liverpool Road are sick because of the persistent sewage stench, that forces them to live in miserable conditions.

DTM Built It, on Liverpool Road, has been facing a sewer pipe leak in their parking lot for the past one and a half years.

They said that, in the past, the sewer manhole would overflow only when it rained heavily, but, in the last two months, it has stared overflowing almost every day, even without any rain.

To make it even worse, the manhole is situated next to their entrance and the dirty water and the smell is affecting their customers.

General manager Danish Hurjuk has reported the matter to the metro several times, to no avail, despite being given four different reference numbers.

He said contractors visited the site, but never fixed the problem.

The Ekurhuleni Metro said their official visited the complainant in the first week of March, and paid a follow-up visit on March 13.

According to metro spokesperson Lebogang Ramashala, the official spoke to a person named Arthur and apologised for the inconvenience experienced.

Ramashala said the metro had been receiving complaints regarding the corner of Bradford and Liverpool streets.

“We attended to the matter and opened the line with a high pressured jet truck,” she said.

“Last month we received a complaint again, and we used a high pressured jet again, but we still could not open the blockage, since the truck’s hose hit an obstacle inside the pipe.”

Ramashala said the metro then opted to temporarily over-pump the sewer in the meantime, so that it cannot affect the consumers around it, while excavating the pipe, which is about nine to 12m deep, for emergency work.

“Unfortunately, the contractor was stopped by Sasol, indicating that there is a gas pipe where they were excavating, and we are busy with way-leaves application, while we are still temporarily over-pumping.”
