Robber shot dead

One suspected robber was killed and another seriously injured after the Halfway Supermarket, on the corner of Jarrah and Birch roads, was robbed on Sunday afternoon.

Crystal Park SAPS media liaison officer Tryna Maritz said four armed men entered the supermarket at around 4.20pm.

The shop owners were assaulted in the process.

“The robbers then took the victim’s vehicle (red Toyota Corolla) and fled the scene,” said Maritz.

“Patrolmen from CMS spotted the suspects and gave chase.

“They called the SAPS for back-up and chased the vehicle along Springs Road, towards Daveyton.”

The suspects and CMS exchanged fire from Pretoria Road into Springs Road.

The suspects lost control of the vehicle and drove into a ditch on the corner of Totius and Springs roads, Crystal Park.

According to ER24 JHB East spokesperson Glen Orritt, one of the suspects was shot multiple times, in the neck, back, chest and stomach.

The man was transported to the Tembisa Hospital in a serious condition, under police guard.

A second suspect did not survive the shooting and was found dead in the veld, where the car hit the ditch.

One of the remaining two suspects was arrested, while the other fled.

Cigarettes and money were found in a back pack of one of the suspects and three firearms were confiscated on the scene.

Crystal Park SAPS detectives are investigating the case and are following up on information received from the suspects.

Crystal Park SAPS station commander Lieut Col Belinda Motaung commended all those involved in apprehending the suspects and for putting their lives at risk to combat violent crime in the area.

The suspects are facing charges of business robbery and assault and were expected to appear in the Benoni Magistrates Court on Tuesday.
