Brave neighbour apprehends burglar in Rynfield

A good relationship between neighbours and a quick response from the CMS security company and the police, led to the arrest of two men, aged 20 and 21, for attempted housebreaking.

It is alleged that on Monday, March 10, at around 3pm, in Elliot Street, Rynfield, a neighbour heard a noise from the house next door and went to investigate.

“He then noticed two men breaking into his neighbours’ house,” said police spokesperson Lieut Nomsa Sekele.

The two fled the scene when they noticed him, but the brave man went back to his house and pressed a panic button, then gave chase to the thugs.

“He managed to apprehend one suspect,” said Sekele.

CMS security and police also joined in and started searching for the second suspect, who was found hiding behind the door of a back room, on another property.

Both suspects were arrested and detained by the Benoni SAPS.

Sekele said police investigations revealed that one of the suspects arrested is currently out on bail for a similar offence.

Due to the high number of burglaries occurring at residential properties, police will further their investigation to check if the men could be linked to other crimes.

Both suspects appeared in the Benoni Magistrates Court on March 12, and are expected back in court on March 18.

They were both remanded in custody.
