Trees emerge from graves

Trees, shrubs, knee-high grass and weeds sprouting from graves are are some of the things with which people are confronted when visiting the Styx Road Cemetery, in Actonville.

The cemetery, which is over 100 years old, is in a state of being overgrown.

Ward 29’s PR councillor, Haseena Ismail, who brought the matter to the City Times’s attention, said the cemetery has been in this overgrown state for years.

“Styx Road Cemetery is a total mess,” he added.

“Residents’ loved-ones (grandparents and great-great-grandparents) are buried there.

“For the past two to three years no maintenance whatsoever has been done at the cemetery, therefore the place looks like a veld and, even worse, anyone passing it won’t even know it’s a cemetery unless they have loved-ones buried there.”

Ismail said most of the area’s perimeter wall is missing.

Lebogang Ramashala, Ekurhuleni’s acting spokesperson, said the cemetery was “cut and cleaned” in December 2013, and January, this year.

She said a contractor was appointed on March 3 to maintain the graveyard.

Ramashala added that maintenance work may have been delayed by rainy weather.
