25 prostitutes arrested

The Benoni SAPS arrested more than 100 people in a clean-up operation, in several sectors of the precinct, last week.

A total of 70 illegal immigrants, 13 people who committed offences on trains and 25 prostitutes were arrested on Friday.

These arrests were made in an operation focused on the Benoni CBD, Western Extension, Benoni South, Lakefield, Westedene and The Stewards.

An operation on Tuesday, last week, was undertaken in Northmead, Northvilla, Airfield, Brentwood Park, Brentwood Park AH, Norton’s Home Estate, Benoni North AH and Benoni Small Farms.

This operation, in which the SAPS received assistance from security companies and the Community Policing Forum (CPF), resulted in the arrest of 47 illegal immigrants.

Benoni SAPS station commander Brig Poobalan Subbiah said these arrests are work in progress, in ridding Benoni of crime.

“This will continue, including large scale operations to deal with threats in Benoni,” he added.

“It’s about keeping to the promise – we will clean Benoni step-by-step – slowly but surely.”

The station commander advised the community not to employ people who are in the country illegally, as it is a criminal offence and urged residents to report all crimes to the police.

Subbiah said police will root out drugs and illegal trading in the Benoni Plaza, with operations planned in the next few weeks.

In an interview with the City Times, last month, Subbiah urged people to refrain from using prostitutes’ services, as this leads to other crimes.

He said, in the interview, that he also has a multi-dimensional approach to dealing with drugs, which will also involve various other role players.
