Pat Conway remembered

A family and community are mourning the loss of Patrick Richard Conway who passed away at the age of 62 years old on Sunday, February 16.

Despite the sorrow and sadness that has come from his loss, Conway will be remembered for the happiness that he brought to the lives of the people who knew him in all aspects of life.

Conway was extremely well-known in the steel industry, and was a proud sports enthusiast and philanthropist.

His friends will probably better know him by one of his endearing nicknames such as Conners, Iron Gloves (when he allegedly dropped many catches as a cricket wicket-keeper), Swerve, The Lip (as a result of his chirps and sharp sense of humour), The Boss and PCP (Pat Can’t Put and later changed to Pat Can Put).

He became a member of Benoni Northerns Sports Club before the official clubhouse opened on July 21, 1973, and later became the chairman of Benoni Northerns from 1990 to 1993, after which he was awarded a lifetime membership.

As a schoolboy, Patrick played first-team hockey and cricket.

Conway also loved his golf and as a founding member of the Saturday Swingers, if he was not at home watching cricket, he could most surely be located at Benoni Country Club.

He always gave back generously to the clubs in which he was involved in, as he believed that they were the best environment to develop life-long friendships.

He started mini-cricket at Willowmore Park, was a loyal supporter of Benoni Northerns football and sponsored hot chocolate and Old Brown Sherry at Benoni Country Club on Saturday mornings in winter.

Conway leaves behind his wife Patricia, two sons Richard and Terence, daughters Lauren and Michelle, grandchildren Georgia and Luke, his sisters Denise, Norma, Margaret and brother Trevor and many others who considered him a part of their family.

Benoni Northerns president Ted Jarvis said: “The executive and members of Benoni Northern Sports Club mourn the death of Pat Conway.

“As former chairman and life member of the club, his contribution was immeasurable.

“He will be sorely missed.”
