Little did he know that within the package containing the sandwich was human excrement, as well.
Accused, Thabo Anthony Kofa Mokoena (29), who had just been sentenced to life plus 15 years in prison, in the afternoon of February 11, stunned everyone when he flung some of the faeces at prosecutor Thabo Mosikili, hitting him on his shirt.
“He then flung some in my direction, and I ducked behind the bench,” said Cox.
For a few seconds, Cox said, he thought it was a chicken sandwich, when he noticed a brownish stuff and slices of bread.
“But the stench became so bad we started realising something was very wrong,” he added.
The courtroom had to be evacuated immediately and matters still to be heard were all postponed.
Cox called the accused’s behaviour unbecoming, and said it was degrading, as “our dignity has been attacked”.
Mosikili has already indicated that he will lay crimen injuria and assault charges against the accused, but Cox said he won’t be taking any action, as Mokoena is already set to serve a long sentence.
“But I will support the prosecutor if he decides to proceed with the charges,” he added.
Cox said the accused are normally searched when they enter the court room, “but it was just after lunch and everyone thought the package contained some food.”
