Thieves found stripping stolen car in graveyard

Police pounced on car thieves who were busy stripping a stolen vehicle, in a graveyard, on February 2.

The bakkie, a Toyota Fortuner, was stolen in Rynfield on the same day, at around 10am.

The Actonville police, together with reservists, followed information about a stolen vehicle which was hidden in the Rynsoord Cemetery.

“The officers proceeded to the graveyard at around 2pm and decided to observe the situation; about an hour later, five men started stripping the bakkie,” said police spokesman Capt Mack Mngomezulu.

Police then made a move and caught all of them in the act.

Mngomezulu said police also recovered a number of cellphones in their possession and equipment used to steal vehicles.

A Quantum taxi in which they were travelling was also confiscated.

Police said the suspects might be involved in a number of vehicle theft cases.

All the suspects were detained at the Benoni Police Station for theft of the motor vehicle and possession of suspected stolen property.

They were due to appear in the Benoni Magistrates Court.
