The top three learners also received laptops.

Bursaries to the value of R5.7-million were awarded to the region’s 230 top matric learners.

The bursary recipients also each received R500 worth of book vouchers at the Mayoral Academic Excellence Awards.

Speaking to the students, the mayor, Mondli Gungubele said bursaries were an investment in the lifetime future of council.

“We are not doing you a favour by awarding you bursaries, we are doing ourselves a favour, because we believe education is a lifetime investment that can only serve to grow our city and country,” he said.
