Gauteng provincial police spokesperson Brig Neville Malila said the appointment could be made as soon as in the next two to three weeks.
Malila, however, declined to reveal who the person is.
“Benoni has had acting station commanders for a long time and we are finalising the process of appointing a permanent one,” he said.
At a CPF meeting in October, last year, residents expressed the need for a permanent commander, saying the lack of one was proving a challenge in the fight against crime.
Benoni police last had a permanent station commander during Brig Giovondsamy Mariemuthoo’s tenure.
Mariemuthoo was removed from this post 16 months ago, after figures revealed in the Gauteng Legislature showed his prolonged absences from work since he took over the reins at the station some three years ago.
In March, last year, figures showed the brigadier had taken 106 days sick leave, 39 days study leave, 122 days normal vacation and capped leave, as well as three days of family responsibility leave.
