Local gynaecologist out on R10 000 bail for attempted murder of wife

A local gynaecologist, accused of critically injuring his wife with a piece of exercise equipment, has been granted bail.

Police said the The Life Glynnwood Hospital medic used a 2kg dumbbell to hit his wife on the head, while she was taking a shower in their home, early in the morning of January 24.

It is believed the doctor attacked her after they had argued.

The 48-year-old doctor then went to the police station to report the matter and to hand himself over.

He arrived at the police station and informed members on duty that he had “killed his wife”.

“After questioning him, the police went to the house, where they found the woman lying in bed and bleeding,” said Benoni police spokesperson Lieut Nomsa Sekele.

She had sustained head injuries.

Sekele said an ambulance was summoned and the wife was rushed to The Life Gynnwood Hospital, in a critical condition.

The doctor was arrested and detained by the Benoni SAPS, and a case of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm was opened.

The charge was, however, changed to attempted murder when the doctor appeared in the Benoni Magistrates Court on January 27, where he was also granted R10 000 bail.

Amongst the bail conditions, Benoni Magistrates Court senior prosecutor December Mthimumye said, the doctor is not allowed contact with his wife or to interfere with the investigation.

He was also ordered to vacate his matrimonial home until the matter is finalised.

The doctor was not asked to plead and, on January 27, Benoni magistrate Ian Cox postponed the case to February 12, for further investigation.

The City Times spoke to The Life Glynnwood Hospital marketing manager Elbett Bole, following the doctor’s arrest.

Bole confirmed the incident and that the doctor is employed at the hospital.

She added that the hospital does not get involved in domestic violence and said that his patients will be referred to other gynaecologists within the hospital.

Bole could not be drawn to comment on whether the doctor would still be allowed to practice at the hospital, where he has been working for between five to 10 years.
