Local gynaecologist accused of critically injuring wife

The wife of a gynaecologist who practices at The Life Glynnwood Hospital has been listed as being in a critical condition after her husband allegedly beat her with exercise equipment and left her bleeding, on Friday, January 24.

Police said the medic used a 2kg dumbbell to hit his wife on the head, while she was taking a shower in their home, early in the morning.

It is believed the doctor attacked her after they had argued.

The 48-year-old doctor then went to the police station to report the matter and to hand himself over.

He arrived at the police station and informed members on duty that he had “killed his wife”.

“After questioning him, the police went to the house, where they found the woman lying in bed and bleeding,” said Benoni police spokesperson Lieut Nomsa Sekele.

She had sustained head injuries.

Sekele said an ambulance was summoned and the wife was rushed to The Life Gynnwood Hospital in a critical condition.

The doctor was arrested and detained by the Benoni SAPS, and a case of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm was opened.

He is due to appear in court today (January 27).The investigation is continuing.

The Life Glynnwood Hospital marketing manager Elbett Bole confirmed the incident and that the doctor is employed at the hospital.

She added that the hospital does not get involved in domestic violence.

“His patients will be referred to other gynaecologists within the hospital,” she said.

Bole could not be drawn to comment on whether the doctor would still be allowed to practice at the hospital, where he has been working for between five to 10 years.
