Police arrested for the disappearance of a Nigerian man in Western Extension

The two police officers accused of assaulting, suffocating and disposing of a Nigerian national have been arrested.

The officers from the Brixton SAPS, aged 31 and 32, were arrested this morning (January 28), following investigations by the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid).

Benoni police spokesperson Lieut Nomsa Sekele confirmed the arrest of the two officers.

“They have been charged with kidnapping and will be appearing in the Benoni Magistrates Court on January 29,” said Sekele.

At this stage, it is not yet clear whether the CCTV video footage from neighbouring properties, thought to have captured the incident, might have contributed to the arrest of the officers.

Nigerian Theddeus Duru (52) was last seen on Friday, January 17, after the two Flying Squad members from the Brixton police allegedly went to his house, beat him up, suffocated him, loaded him into their car and left.

The incident occurred at around 10am, on a property situated at the intersection of Turvey Street and Elston Avenue.

A group of Nigerian men then marched to the Benoni police, to demand “justice” and to deliver a memorandum, on January 20.

Representatives from the Nigerian Embassy also visited the Benoni Police Station on January 27, to enquire about the matter.
