Nigerians get feedback on memorandum, Ipid to investigate

Nigerians in Western Extension received feedback on the memorandum they handed over to the Benoni police on January 20.

This follows the mysterious disappearance of one of their brothers, whom they allege police from the Brixton SAPS beat up, suffocated and disposed of.

Acting commander of the Benoni Police Station, Col Thomas Maupa, said that they informed the Nigerians that a picture of the missing man, Theddeus Duru (52), has been circulated.

Among their grievances, the Nigerians also did not want the case investigated by the Benoni police.

“We informed them that the case has been taken over by the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid) and that the Benoni police will only investigate the case of a missing person,” said Maupa.

Nigerian Kingley Onyeri confirmed that an investigator from the Ipid came to take a statement from them.

On the flip side, their march to the police station left many residents in Western Extension fuming, with one reader writing a comment on www.benonicitytimes.co.za, saying he can’t believe “their audacity”.

“They flaunt the law, and then cry and demonstrate when something doesn’t go their way.”

Another commentator remarked: “They are up-in-arms over the disappearance of one of their brothers, when they have been destroying our youth for years, so they must bear the consequences for brazenly breaking the law with the sale of drugs.”

For years, residents of Western Extension have been accusing the Nigerians of being behind a roaring drug trade in the area, which they said, fueled the deterioration of the “once beautiful town”.

Several steps have been taken to fight the problem, with the CPF going on the offensive last year, by enlisting the services of the National Prosecuting Authority’s (NPA) Asset Forfeiture Unit, to help them in their fight.

According to a State advocate for the Asset Forfeiture Unit, John Wilson, in terms of section 51 of the Prevention of Organised Crime Act 121 of 1998, the National Director of Public Prosecution (NDPP) may apply to a judge in chambers, or a magistrate, for an order notifying a person having an interest control over property, where there are reasonable grounds to believe that such property is an instrument of an offence.

The order is then served on the owner, and in the event the owner persists with renting out the property to drug traffickers, the Asset Forfeiture Unit will have no difficulty in seizing and forfeiting the property to the State.

Letters of eviction were delivered to such houses last year. Some complied, while others are pending.

  1. Thank YOU for a medium like this where one can be able to express his or feelings.I must state the fact there is law that abides everyone,be sa citizen or non-citizen.If anyone violates the law,the culprit shall be brought to book & face the offence he/she committed. That Nigerians are selling drugs does not mean all Nigerian in sa are drug dealers & that should not be a reason why Nigerians in sa should be molestated & intimidated.E.g,if am caught with drugs,i should be judged with the drug,vise-visa.And ones punishment should not be extended to others, besides not only Nigerians are selling drugs. This issue of sap brutally beating & killing Nigerians because they are selling drugs is an eye-sore & very unfair.last 2yrs,there was a likely same story of sap killing a Nigerian in Boksburg, now in benoni. This is very unfair. This could result to many things you might not think of if proper conduct & care is not taken urgently.I personally is not happy about it.We are all Africans & human being as well.Thank u & God bless.

  2. I know the cops from the flying squad r hard working dedicated policemen. They are in the police to make a difference. If these policemen appear in court over these allegations I say lets show our support and protest outside the courts when this case is being heard. If the nigerians can protest so can we! Lets take back our community!

  3. And I bet the only witnesses they have are the cheap prostitutes who work for them, selling their drugs for the nigerians. When the nigerians leave! Your’ll must leave with them. Viva Saps Flying Squad Viva Brixton.

  4. [without prejudice]
I’m with the SAPS Flying Squad ALL the way. These Nigerians and “THEIR ” so called legal representative, Mr ‘Lawyer’ …….., DONT YOU have a conscience? . . Do you have any children of your own ? . . Do you not for a minute consider to think what we are exposed to on a daily basis. Do your children see what their father is “supporting” ?.
HEY ! . . i have an idea. . bring your daughters here to Western Extension, let them out the car, leave them here for the day and into the night, drive away to your fancy suburb. THEN return and pick up the pieces! ! Every, likely EVERY drug lord and dealer would have had his pleasure with your daughter[s] or nieces! ! [ age doesn’t matter! ]
What are YOU doing protecting these thugs!? .$$$$$$ ???

THE medical profession has a code of ethics by which it abides! . . Does the legal profession have such a body? . . if they do, my guess is you’re not aware of it OR is the money too good ?

My suggestion is to advise these people to cool their business, move to somewhere out of our suburbs. They are crying because of the pressure on them, but YOU Mr Lawyer, do YOU live in a fancy house, in an enclosure where you, upon locking up your office, leave US and your Nigerian drug pedlars to live with this mess.?

You are obviously a well educated man, so please for the sake of the “community” help us by steering these people away from where we are TRYING to live a life without the filth that “LAGOS” presents to us!

Good luck, Karma is a bitch!

  5. Firstly Don, get your facts in order unless you a supporter of these illegal occurances at this SPECIFIC property! We live in the area and we know what is happening in Western Extention! Dont come with your BS!
Secondly: Why dont these Nigerians operate their businesses in the township – we are all Africans after all!? I tell you why – they wouldnt last one night in a township because öur”people will take care of them and a few more Nigerians will dissapear. This LAGOS behaviour willnot be tolerated in the townships. Why most we tollearte it?
Thirdly: I would love to sell my house and move away from this but why should I as a lawfull taxpaying citizen allow this scum to take whats mine? Because of this “LAGOS” manner I cannot sell as no one is interested in chasing hookers every day, picking up used condoms on the pavement and looking onto THIS drug house. Well done Brixton

Well done SAPS !!! Do it again soon please !!!
