No major school intake hiccoughs

At least 334 late enrolments were registered by the Gauteng Department of Education for admission into Grade One and Grade Eight, at Benoni schools.

The department said the late enrolments figure, which was released on Friday last week, “increases daily”.

The application period was open from April 9 to May 23.

Benoni High School

Principal Jake Ceronio said on Monday that quite a number of pupils had not been placed, but the department was trying to find places for them in schools.

He said about five people applied for matric placement, but the school does not accept these.

The school also received a number of applications into Grades Nine to 11, and many of these are on the waiting list.

Ceronio said many of the pupils who applied to Benoni High School may have been placed at other schools, and he was waiting to get clarity on this by Tuesday.

At least 100 Grade Eight pupils were on the A list (pupils who live, or whose parents work in the school area) on Monday morning.

Petit High School

An official at the school, who does not want to be named, said the school is still receiving late applications, which will be referred to the district.

Belverdere School

The school’s principal, Hannes du Plessis, said there were about 10 late enrolments, and the school hopes to accommodate about six of these pupils immediately.

He said there were far fewer late applications than last year.
