Breakdown of Benoni schools’ achievements

Most of the schools in Benoni improved on their 2012 pass rates in the 2013 National Senior Certificate (NSC) examinations.

The breakdown of each school’s results are:

Benoni High School

2013 pass rate: 100 per cent

2012 pass rate: 100 per cent

Matric pupils: 275

Distinctions: 293

University exemption: 76 per cent

Principal’s Jake Ceronio’s comment:

“We are very pleased with the results. The number of years that we have not had a failure is exceptional. I do not think another school in the country can boast with our figures. Contrary to what people think, we do not get all the clever children in South Africa. We have pupils and teachers who did an exceptional job and supportive parents and governing body.”

Wordsworth High School

2013 pass rate: 100 per cent

2012 pass rate: 99, 7 per cent

Matric pupils: 124

Distinctions: 70

University exemption: 91 per cent

Deputy-principal John Bothma’s comment:

“Compared to last year there was an incredible improvement. Every year is an investment in a child’s life which pays dividend in five years, because of the dedicated staff and school management. The children did excellent work. How do you better a 100 per cent pass rate? We now have to maintain it.”

Benoni Muslim School

2013 pass rate: 100 per cent

2012 pass rate: 98 per cent

University exemption: 86, 2 per cent

“We have sustained our performance in 2013 with excellent matric results. The learners themselves were highly motivated to achieve and have produced excellent results.”

Hoërskool Brandwag

“Ons is bekend as die kleiner skool met meer geleenthede en met die kleiner getal matrikulante glo ons dat 2013 se prestasies ‘n goeie beeld uitdra van wat die werklike kwaliteit van onderrig en toewyding is van onderwysers wat net hul bes lewer. Ons is opgewonde oor die nuwe onderrigplanne en klas van 2014. By Noorderlig gaan ons voluit om die beste te lewer en glo dat ons prestasies aan die einde van die jaar nog beter gaan wees as 2013.”

Liverpool Secondary School

2013 pass rate: 94 per cent

2012 pass rate: 97 per cent

University exemption: 77 per cent

Principal Prem Maharaj’s comment: “I am slightly disappointed that we have dropped by three per cent, but I am proud of the educators and pupils for all their efforts.”
