Principal comments on ‘matric sluts’ slur

The Benoni High School notice board was branded with the words "matric sluts" in early December.

A photo of the phrase has since been circulated on social media.

The school’s principal Jake Ceronio said he was informed of the obscene words on December 9 and had the words removed immediately.

Ceronio said the words “matric results” were written on the board, which is visible from roads at the school’s main entrance in Dalrymple Street, when the school closed for the holidays in early December.

He believes a disgruntled person stood on the wall near the board, waited for security personnel to do their rounds, changed the lettering and posted the photo to Facebook.

Ceronio said youngsters think it is okay to laugh at others when they are not on the receiving end.

“I find it absolutely unacceptable,” Ceronio said.

“How do the school’s girls and their parents feel?”

The principal has offered a R500 reward for anyone who comes forward with information leading to the identity of the perpetrators.

Anyone with this information is urged to contact the school on 011 849 4129 January 13.
