Cash-in-transit robbery at Voortrekker KFC

Three unknown men escaped with over R80 000, during a cash-in-transit robbery, at the Voortrekker Street KFC, near the taxi rank.

The incident occurred on November 30, in the morning, when cash-in-transit guards were collecting cash from the KFC.

Benoni Police Station commander Col Thomas Maupa said the three men were masquerading as customers.

“They were standing in the customer queue, inside the restaurant, and when the guard came out of the cash office with a box containing cash, they pointed firearms at him and then grabbed the cash box,” said Maupa.

The guard was also disarmed.

The three men then drove away in a car that was parked outside.

Maupa said no shots were fired and no was injured in the robbery.

Police suspect that it might have been an inside job, due to circumstances surrounding the robbery.

“Guards usually collect cash at different times and it can’t be a coincidence that robbers chose 8.30am on Saturday,” he said.

Maupa said the police are investing a case of armed robbery and urged anyone who might have seen the getaway car to contact investigating officer Col Simon Ledwaba on 082 771 6390.
