Natya Kala Keseri celebrates 35th graduation

The Natya Kala Keseri Dance Academy (NKKDA) of South Africa celebrated its 35th Arangetram (graduation) in Bharata Natyam Indian Classical Dance, on September 28, at the Seva Samaj Auditorium Actonville.

Graduates Alicia Pillay (20), Meerusha Govender (18), Simmone Naicker (17), Hashna Jeaven (16) and Kritikaa Sookran (16) took a spellbound audience on a spectacular journey through India, where various items of pure classical dance, from the South of India, were performed.

They each received a diploma with the title Kumari, meaning “dancer”.

On October 12, the NKKDA created a massive buzz with its 27th annual dance concert, “Poetry in motion”.

Achari was set to make it a notch above the rest.

Special praise went to the large classical segments performed by the beginner, junior, senior and graduate levels.

Even the teachers gave a fabulous performance, to the audience’s delight, with participation from all NKKDA branches, in Mayfair, Emmarentia, Springs, Witbank and Benoni.

After the classical dances, the second half of the concert highlighted the carefree Bollywood segments.

The audience gave the students rousing applause and appreciation for their skill.

The last dance was a folk item, by all the senior male and female dancers.

It was the crowning glory of the concert, and the ultimate showstopper.

The guest list for the evening included dignitaries from the Ekurhuleni Arts Council, members and foreign guests from as far as Taiwan.

The tutor and artistic director, Srimuti Roshni Achari, who has come to be known as a meticulous dance guru with high quality choreography and dance repertoires, was praised for her outstanding choreography and her efforts in promoting Indian art in South Africa, especially Benoni.
