George’s compassion with fashion

George Potgieter is a fashion designer and dressmaker, based in Northmead.

Each year he asks a school to identify a deserving student who cannot attend her matric farewell, as she is not able to acquire a dress.

He then offers to make a special dress for her.

“I do not want to know what their circumstances are; they don’t have to tell me their problems,” he told the City Times.

He does this for no other reason than to make a girl’s dreams come true.

“I wish I could take a picture of these girls’ faces when they see their dresses,” said George.

“To give is definitely better than to receive.”

He said the girl for whom he made the dress this year is beautiful.

“She came for her first appointment with her mom and showed me a photo of the dress she likes; she did not want to go too over the top, but she looked beautiful.”

“Another person called and said they would do her hair, and another said they would do her nails – It always comes together beautifully.”

His daughter-in-law Tandi Potgieter said: “I was privileged to witness the handing over of this year’s dress to a lovely girl who was not going to her matric farewell until George stepped in.”

He has been in the “rag trade” his whole life and does this because he feels that there is always “that one girl” who cannot obtain a dress due to various reasons.

George plans to continue making dresses for girls in need.
