Smash-and-grabber who was dragged underneath car dies

The man who was dragged beneath a vehicle he tried to smash-and-grab at the intersection of Snake and Pretoria roads, earlier this year, has died in the Tembisa Hospital.

Themba Nkuna (26), who is from Mamelodi, died on Friday, October 4, without recovering from the coma he fell into shortly after his hospitalisation, on August 20.

The Benoni SAPS have opened an inquest docket following the man’s death and will refer the matter to the courts.

On August 30, the City Times reported on how the would-be smash-and-grabber was dragged beneath the vehicle after he and the woman driving the car tussled over her handbag.

The woman held onto the bag and sped off, while Nkuna clung to it, resulting in him being pulled underneath the vehicle.

The City Times received hordes of comments and likes on Facebook shortly after the incident, with many commending the driver for her tenacious behaviour.
